The American Board of Sport Psychology Athlete Test Center was designed to give sport psychology practitioners, athletes and coaches access to sophisticated cutting-edge assessment of athlete neurocognitive, psychological, behavioral and motor processes. The following test batteries have been empirically validated and field-tested and comprise an integral part of the Carlstedt Protocol approach to athlete evaluation and mental training. They are crucial to assessing subtle subliminal mind-body (neuropsychophysiological) processes that are not readily observable. Insight into athlete brain, attention, physiological reactivity and coping tendencies is an important first step in a systematic and evidence-based approach to applied sport psychology and establishment of a mental training program that is predicated on science.

B. CSARCS-A Psychometric Information

The Carlstedt Subliminal-Attention-Reactivity and Coping Scale-A is used to measure three psychological constructs that have been shown to be intimately linked to attention, physiological reactivity and cognitive processing of internal and external stimuli, key components of peak performance. Emerging evidence from independent lines of research has explained up to 50% of the variance in the performance equation on the basis of objective longitudinal performance outcome measures, increasing linearly as a function of critical moments. The constructs, hypnotic susceptibility/absorption, neuroticism and repressive coping can be viewed as Primary Higher Order factors that mediate virtually all psychological and behavioral factors associated with peak mental performance and are instrumental in influencing mind-body processes that are central to peak performance.

The CSARCS-A emanated from clinical instruments that measured the above constructs including the Stanford Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility-A, Tellegen Absorption Scale, Eysenck Personality Inventory-N and the Marlowe-Crowne scale. It was conceptualized to provide practitioners with an all-in-one test battery that would tap the above measures in athletes as well as predict performance during critical moments of competition. The CSARCS-A has more face validity than the above clinical scales, a characteristic that can be beneficial or detrimental to an instrument’s psychometric integrity. However, based on preliminary item analyses, the CSARCS-A appears to have adequate to very good convergent validity, which suggests that this more athlete-specific scale does indeed measure the same constructs that its counterparts do. e The CSARCS-A is emerging as a valid and reliable measure of subliminal attentional, reactive and coping tendencies in athletes. The CSARCS is being coupled with the BRC neurocognitive battery (Web Neuro Sport) to further establish the CSARCS-A’s criterion referenced and concurrent validity as well as augment its predictive validity. This is important since statistical performance outcome measures alone are not the only indicators of psychological performance. Establishing relationships between a self-report instrument and actual neuropsychological functioning is especially important when viewed in the context of subsequent mental training interventions and their efficacy. Post-training measures on self-report tests and neurocognitive performance may eventually reflect subtle changes in the brain that could be central to improving psychological performance. Research using the previously mentioned clinical batteries strongly suggests that constellations of the above constructs exert their effects on performance by inducing changes in relative hemispheric activation as a function of critical moments.

(Back to Table of Contents)
Tests should only be taken under the supervision of Licensed Clinicians who have completed graduate level coursework, research and training in psychological testing/psychometrics and test interpretation. Post-doctoral training in neuroscience and psychophysiology is also highly recommended to maximize client services.

Practitioners and athletes who do not have such training can access to Dr. Roland A. Carlstedt who is available as a consultant to provide comprehensive analysis, interpretation and report services to test takers.

The Basic Web NeuroSport Test Battery Fee is $80.00 (Eighty US Dollars). This fee includes: Computer-based Online Neurocognitive testing, the CSARCS-A, and additional personality tests measuring various traits that are relevant to mental performance.
A marketing and revenue model has been created to encourage practitioners to participate in the test center and research project.

In order to maximize the validity and reliability of these tests and their interpretation it is recommended that you consult with Dr. Carlstedt.

His Report and Interpretive Services cost $80.00 (Eighty US Dollars) per athlete/client. This is in addition to the BRC-test fee.

Practitioners/Coaches can add any fee that is attainable in their market above Dr. Carlstedt’s report service consulting fee (e.g., $200.00, a fee that would include your work with a client and Dr. Carlstedt’s report). Practitioners are urged to include the ABSP-BRC battery in a 10 session athlete assessment and intervention package.

Athletes can also directly contact Dr. Carlstedt for private consultation via DrRCarlstedt@aol.com

PRESS RELEASE (BRC Sydney, May 27; ABSP New York, June 1, 2005)

Illuminating Brain and Psychological Processes in Athletes: The Brain Resource Company in Conjunction with the American Board of Sport Psychology Launch Web Neuro Sport, a web based Cognitive and Psychological assessment tool and Database.

The Brain Resource Company (BRC – www.BrainResource.com) today launched Web Neuro Sport, an Internet-based Cognitive and Psychological tool aimed at a wide range of athletes. The key partner in this project is Dr. Roland A. Carlstedt, the Chairman of the American Board of Sport Psychology, and the American Board of Sport Psychology (www.americanboardofsportpsychology.org).

“Training of athletes has traditionally focussed on the physical dimension. Increasingly, coaches and athletes are realising the importance of mental training as the crucial variable for success. Web Neuro Sport provides insight into an athletes cognition, personality traits, emotional intelligence and psychological resilience, for tailoring training regimes for peak performance” Dr. Evian Gordon, a Neuroscientist and CEO of the BRC.

Web Neuro Sport forms part of the growing suite of brain services offered by BRC. BRC established the first standardized international database on the human brain (with 50 user groups in the USA, Europe, South Africa and Australia). The growing sport database within the broader BRC database, will allow sport psychology practitioners, coaches and athletes to obtain valuable information on subtle brain processes and subliminal psychological and behavioral tendencies that mediate sport performance that, are not readily observable and rarely assessed.

Web Neuro Sport will allow coaches and athletes to access sophisticated neuropsychological tests from their computer and learn more about key cognitive processes. Specifically, the profile includes an assessement of cognition (sensory-motor, memory, attention, planning and decision making), Personality, Emotional intelligence and Personal history. Crucially, it also includes the Carlstedt Subliminal Attention, Reactivity and Coping Scale (CSARCS-A) a psychometric instrument that is based on Dr. Roland A. Carlstedt’s award-winning research (2001 American Psychological Association Division 47 Dissertation Award) and Theory of Critical Moments, a mind-body model of sport performance that has linked peak performance or Zone states to three primary higher order psychological and behavioral measures. They have explained up to 50% of the variance in peak performance, an unprecedented finding. The measures that Dr. Carlstedt has isolated are intimately linked to attention, physiological reactivity and cognitive processing of emotions and will provide athletes and coaches immediate feedback regarding an athlete’s psychological tendencies, especially during critical moments.

Dr. Carlstedt referred to the advent of the BRC International Sport Database as “a milestone in the annals of applied sport psychology that will give coaches and practitioners unprecedented access to sophisticated evidence-based procedures and approaches to the psychological assessment of athletes and their mental training.” Dr. Gordon added “BRC decided to work with Dr. Carlstedt because of his integrative and evidence-based assessment and intervention protocol and the potency of his predictive Critical Moments model of peak psychological performance, a model and approach that lends itself well to our integrative approach to assessing the brain”.

This first Web based phase of the International Sport Database on athlete brain function and performance, is expected to be completed within 6 months, leading to better athlete evaluation and guiding of interventions (mental training).
