III. ATHLETES and Coaches
If you are serious about your mental game it is time to get beyond the hype. The key to improving psychologically is having valid and reliable information about mind-body processes that drive peak performance. Being labled or told what to do is not a science-based approach to sport psychology. Most coaches, athletes and even sport psychology practitioners have at best limited insight into key neuropsychological factors that underlie performance tendencies, especially during critical moments during competition. Before you can benefit from mental training you need to know about key measures that have been shown to affect performance profoundly. Science-based mental training is predicated on knowing as much about athlete functioning as possible. Improving mentally takes more than just visualizing or engaging in self-talk, interventions that many athletes are not even capable of engaging in effectively. Your so-called Athlete's Profile determines to a large extent what mental training method will work best for you. Importantly, you also need to know if an intervention is really working and how. In order to experience evidence-based sport psychology you need to be tested and observed during practice and competition while being monitored. You must go beyond antiquated approaches to mental training, into the realm of sophisticated, cutting-edge sport psychology if you want to know where your mental game stands and how to get to the next level.
Check out the Carlstedt Protocol: Science-Based Sport Psychology DVD for an overview of the most extensive and advanced approach to applied sport psychology being used today

CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS
Psychologists
The American Board of Sport Psychology offers credential evaluation and issuance and certification in SPORT PSYCHOLOGY to qualified persons holding a regionally accredited Doctorate in PSYCHOLOGY (Ph.D., PsyD, Ed.D.)or who are licensed/certified as clinical and/or applied psychologists.
Since the use of the occupational designation Psychologist is restricted by law, preventing practitioners without a doctorate in psychology from calling themselves Sport Psychologists, other certification bodies have created generic terms such as Sport Psychology Consultant, Sport Psychology Practitioner, Performance Enhancement Specialist, and Performance/Mental Coach to accommodate and entitle members with both psychology and non-psychology backgrounds under a common non-distinguishing title.
Such designations often do not adequately reflect or convey the background and qualifications many doctorate holders in psychology and sport psychology have.
Essentially, doctorate level psychologists have no official occupational or consultant's designation reflecting their unique training in psychology. Moreover there is no representative and training body or organization that is exclusively devoted to and concerned with psychologists and their presence in and practice of Sport Psychology.
Fortunately, the specific credential Board Certified Sport Psychologist and advanced credential Board Certified Sport Psychologist-Diplomate, recognizing unique training and practice in psychology and contributions to sport psychology, along with continuing education is now available to qualified psychologists.
The American Board of Sport Psychology also offers an extensive training program in Sport Psychology, affording Psychologists the opportunity to enter this rapidly developing field.
TRAINING, CERTIFICATION and RECOGNITION for MASTERS and Bachelor level PRACTITIONERS, CLINICIANS, EDUCATORS, COACHES and TRAINERS
The American Board of Sport Psychology recognizes the need to train, educate and offer certification to practitioners who work with students and athletes on a daily basis. Knowledge of advanced research and methods in Sport Psychology can enhance the effectiveness of practitioners with athletes. Our academic and applied training program will expose you to advanced and cutting-edge methods in Sport Psychology and put you at the forefront of a major paradigm shift in Sport Psychology that we are creating and leading.
THE AMERICAN BOARD of SPORT PSYCHOLOGY ADVANTAGE
The American Board of Sport Psychology certification/training programs are at the forefront of a major paradigm shift in Sport Psychology especially as it applies to athlete assessment and intervention. ABSP Graduates Corner: News, Announcements and Feedback |

Feedback from ABSP Certificate Program Graduates
...The following letter is from a Licensed Psychologist who completed the Master Coach of Sport Psychology certificate program and Board Certification process:
"Basically, I am very positive about the process. It has been a good learning experience. I was looking for an internet course for my personal learning, and found much more. The course led me through several textbooks and many articles through the modules. I took the examinations as well and found them to be further learning experiences. The questions were thought provoking and helped to integrate the material. I believe it took me about 6 to 9 months from start to finish.
To me this type of program makes a great deal of sense for Psychologists who have already completed the formal training and need further learning for an area of specialization. I looked into graduate training at a local university, but found it to be redundant, especially since many of the students in the class were "coaches" and not psychologists. It seems to me this type of program may be "the next big deal."
Best wishes,
Mark Fugit, Psy. D., Licensed Psychologist (date of ABSP Certification 2001)
...From a High School Soccer Coach, Therapist, Sports Performance Counselor
I have always been fascinated with sport psychology and used several techniques to enhance my performance in college soccer. As I searched for a training and certification program, I came across the ABSP and Dr. Carlstedt. Our initial phone conversation lasted over 30 minutes. Dr. Carlstedt impressed me with his expertise and presentation of the program. I was concerned that the program would be too demanding, but the design of the program accommodated my busy schedule. Throughout the program, Dr. Carlstedt was very helpful and informative. He was in close contact with me throughout my course work and final project.
I thoroughly enjoyed the program and would recommend it to others. It has made me a better coach, player, and practitioner.
Richard Alan Chadwick II (Richie), M. Ed. in Counseling (date of ABSP Certification 2005)
...Feedback from a Minister who works with athletes:
"I have recently completed the course for Master Coach of Sport Psychology through the American Board of Sport Psychology. Why would a minister be involved in such an undertaking? I have always been involved and interested in sport, so when I was asked to work with a local volleyball team in the field of mental training I accepted. Although my doctoral work was in the field of guided imagery for Bible study and prayer, I had no training and background in the area of sport. I needed to do some research to prepare myself, but I needed to do it at home. I had neither the time nor the funds to travel to some distant location for classroom work. I found the ABSP on the Internet and then spoke with Dr. Roland A. Carlstedt about the program. I had a close look at the learning modules and knew that they would be demanding. I slowly worked away at them with frequent questions by e-mail or phone to Roland, who was my Mentor.. Sometimes he would answer, and other times he would tell me where I could research the issue. I was really challenged by the ABSP program. In my preparation for the ministry I was not required to read articles from scientific journals or to submit scientific papers. While I was very familiar with theological research, it was a challenge for me to do it in this fashion and in this field. It was also a new experience for me to conduct a research experiment with athletes. I did require some assistance in analyzing the final statistics and drawing conclusions from the data, but Roland told me that this was quite acceptable.
In the end, I’m pleased I took the course. I was exposed to something I wouldn’t have been otherwise, and my knowledge in sport increased several fold. Too, I now work with athletes with more confidence and understanding. I’ve also learned what a great body of research and literature exists today for any given sport.
I do recommend this distance-learning program to anyone who is interested in increasing their knowledge and effectiveness in sport psychology, it was a great adventure.
Good luck."

ETHICS in SPORT PSYCHOLOGY |
|
The American Board of Sport Psychology advances the perspective that organizations in Sport Psychology have the duty to not only inform and protect the public but also proactively expose unethical practice in the field. Unethical practice includes blatent assessment and intervention methods having NO empirical support as well as websites (many operated by persons bound to the APA code of ethics) that contain tenuous claims, embellishment and misinformation. Consequently, we take an activist position in exposing unethical practices, advertisement and charlatanism in the field. This rubric of the ABSP website is used to expose unethical practice in Sport Psychology.
Dr. Roland A. Carlstedt appeared on ESPN's Outside the Lines. He debated the "Brain Typing" system propogated by Jon Niednagel. In response to the enormous publicity this system has received in the last 2-3 years and in light of the fact that "Brain Typing" is devoid of empirical support, The American Board of Sport Psychology has issued a call for a position paper and invites Division 47 of the APA and the AAASP to participate in writing and disseminating such a paper to the media, coaches, athletes, and sport organizations and the public. The ABSP also invites persons having expertise in one or more of the following disciplines to participate as a contributor to the position paper: Sport Psychology; Personality Psychology, Neuroscience (Cognitive, Behavioral, and Anatomical); Neuropsychology; Assessment; Methodology, and Ethics.
Interested persons should check out the Brain Type Institute website at www.braintypes.com for further information on this highly controversial method.
It is the opinion of the ABSP that Brain Typing is a system lacking in scientific merit and we challenge Jon Niednagel to participate in an independent blind study testing his ability to predict brain localization and functioning merely by looking at a person, a challenge he said he welcomes.

Critical Moments During Competition: A Mind-Body Model of Sport Performance When it Counts the Most(double-click for full review)
by: Roland A. Carlstedt, Ph.D.
PEER REVIEW:
“The issue of how athletes can be assessed as a basis for performance management and enhancement is a crucial one for contemporary sport psychology. More basically, assessment for performance management and enhancement in sport is an area where cogent theory, practical concepts, effective methods, and technically defensible measurement procedures are needed. Roland Carlstedt's seminal work provides valuable information that helps fill these gaps. Based on a solid theoretical model of critical moments during competition, coupled with a clear and internally consistent conceptual and operational framework, and using persuasive empirical research from psychology and other areas, including results of his award winning dissertation, Dr. Carlstedt demonstrates substantial relationships between psychological characteristics and performance outcomes in a range of athletes. His work provides guidance for sport psychology researchers and practitioners as well as others involved in human performance at all levels. "The material in this book can help shape the larger knowledge base of sport psychology for years to come.”
--Charles A. Maher, Psy.D. Professor of Psychology Rutgers University, Sport Psychologist, Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland Browns
Why do some professional athletes tend to “deliver” in critical situations, while others are less dependable? Dr. Carlstedt’s Mind-Body Model of Sport Performance focuses on this well known and vexing performance difference between comparably talented highly-skilled athletes. He traces these differences to certain basic personality characteristics and their interplay. Depending on their strength and configuration, these general personal propensities may play either a facilitative or counterproductive (but potentially modifiable) role. Carlstedt’s model is obviously of great relevance to Sport Psychologists. Because of its plausibility as well as its amenability to empirical scrutiny and continuing development, it also merits the attention of a wider readership. It has the potential for evolving into a general model for understanding consistent excellence in response to challenge.
--Auke Tellegen, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Emeritus, University of Minnesota, Personality Psychologist and Behavioral Geneticist
Methodologically rigorous in its approach , Dr. Carlstedt offers a thoroughly innovative perspective on the field of Sport Psychology in this new book. His model of peak performance ambitiously and successfully integrates a wealth of physiological, psychological, and cognitive neuroscience data to forcefully make the case that athletic performance can not only be studied in a controlled fashion, but can be improved systematically. Although scholarly in its methodologies, this book is highly readable, and will be of interest to a wide range of academics, coaches, athletes and mental health and Sport Psychology professionals.
